Community Health

Description

The Community Health Department trains middle-level health manpower to improve the health and well-being of the entire community. Students in this program are exposed to theoretical training, supervised community-based experience, and supervised clinical-based experience. There are three cadres in community health practice:

  • Certificate in Community Health (JCHEW)
  • Diploma in Community Health (CHEW)

The first two aforementioned cadres are trained in colleges/schools of health technologies, while the latter are trained in teaching hospitals. The training and practice of community health workers are regulated by the Community Health Practitioner Registration Board of Nigeria.

Training Objectives

To produce community health workers with appropriate and adequate knowledge, skills, and attitudes for the effective delivery of health care services at the primary health care level.

Admission Requirement

CHEW
  • WASCE, SSCE, NECO, or GCE O/L with five (5) credits at no more than two sittings, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Duration: 3 years (Six Semesters)
  • Junior Community Extension Workers with 2 years of post-qualification experience, in addition to the above requirements. Applicants MUST be registered with the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN) and possess a valid practice license.
  • Duration: 2 Years (Four Semesters)
JCHEW
  • 5 credit passes in WASCE or NECO Examination in English, Mathematics, Biology, and any other two subjects at no more than two sittings.
  • Duration: 2 years (Four Semesters)
